About the qualification

What is Cambridge AS & A Level?

AS Level and A Level

The AS Level is the first half of the A Level. The A Level adds further content and papers on top of it.

Three routes

Take the AS Level only, take the AS in year one and complete the A Level in year two, or take every paper in the same exam series.

Marks carry forward

In the staged route, AS marks are carried forward under the rules and time limits in the Cambridge Handbook.

Grades

AS Level candidates are graded a to e. A Level candidates are graded A* to E.

Depth of study

Courses build subject knowledge together with application, analysis and evaluation, tested in structured and essay questions.

A path to university

Cambridge International AS & A Levels are designed to prepare students for university study.

How the exams work

Three routes to the qualification.

AS Level only

Sit the AS papers (Papers 1 and 2) in the same exam series. Graded a to e.

Staged A Level

Sit the AS papers in year one, then Papers 3 and 4 in year two to complete the A Level.

Full A Level

Sit all four papers in the same exam series. Graded A* to E.
